Cobalt and DR Congo: how one country set the price of a battery metal
DR Congo produces about three-quarters of the world's cobalt, from the copper belt of Katanga around Kolwezi and Lubumbashi, and China's CMOC is the world's largest producer. Much of it has been dug by hand: UNICEF estimated in 2014 that about 40,000 children worked in the southern mines. Oversupply drove the price to US$24,343 a tonne at the start of 2025, a nine-year low. In February 2025 Congo banned all cobalt exports, then replaced the ban with an annual cap of 89,224 tonnes — roughly half of 2024's exports — and by the end of 2025 the price had more than doubled to US$53,005. Indonesia, with about 10% from its nickel plants, is no real rival. When one country controls three-quarters of a metal, it can set the price.
