What qualifies as DSO
Direct Shipping Ore is mineralisation rich enough to sell after crushing and screening, without concentration. In iron ore it generally means hematite above roughly 58% Fe; the ore goes from pit to crusher to train to ship.
The contrast is magnetite, typically 20–40% Fe in the ground, which must be ground fine and magnetically concentrated before it can be sold. That processing step is the single biggest difference in capital cost between the two.
Why the distinction drives project economics
A DSO project needs a pit, a crushing and screening plant and haulage. A magnetite project needs all of that plus a concentrator, far more power and water, and a tailings facility. Capital intensity can differ by an order of magnitude.
That is why DSO deposits are developed first in any new province, and why remaining undeveloped DSO is usually constrained by infrastructure — distance to rail and port — rather than by metallurgy.
The trade-off
DSO is cheaper to produce but usually lower grade and higher in impurities than magnetite concentrate, which can reach 65–68% Fe with low silica and alumina.
So the two sell into different parts of the market: DSO into conventional blast furnace blends, high-grade magnetite concentrate into pellet feed and increasingly into direct reduction, where impurity limits are tighter.
